This is so predictable and funny. Is this a Steve Hilton or Guy Black special ? It is PR-man Cameron who is surrounded by the PR Gliterati isn't it ?

Anyway, how does being single make someone "gay" when so many gay men are married to women anyway ? This is the pathetic and puerile level of modern politics bringing the teenage enthusiasms of student hacking to national media attention.

Frankly, the Tory Party has exposed itself as vacuous and the plaything of PR men and the media claque.............I doubt it has much of a future with the electorate and we floating voters will just turn elsewhere

Mr Cameron

Yo if you vote for me i will give you all cannabis for free yo man ziz is wicked. yeezz is izz. To the future.

Good for Fox for refusing to even go into it. Its a silly story and even if it was true I don't think anyone would care.

I think the one organisation that we can safely say has been trying to smear some of the candidates is Associated Newspapers so I blame them not David Davis.

I feel that the only rumour recently that could have come from one camp is Fox's palls might have spread that "Davis will stand down" rubbish in order to present their candidate as the only one that can beat David Cameron.

John Hustings

I think the Davis campaign does struggle a bit because of Andrew Mitchell, who does strike me as being a bit tactless in his comments.

That said, it is absurd to blame Davis for the fact that Liam Fox was far too long-winded in answering a question!

malcolm

I fear I may have done an injustice to the Standard with my earlier post.On more careful reading of the article it may be that Fox raised these issues in an interview with them himself. This is done in the context of the 'smears' that are apparently all over Westminster. What he hoped to achieve by this I have no idea.

kris

After looking at this further it does appear less likely that the comments about Fox being either Gay (which shouldn't be a smear i agree) or had a promisuous past originated from camp Davis, more likely from Camp Fox itself. could this be their attempt to try to attract the kind of media attention that Cameron enjoyed? Appologies to all Davis supporters, the machination of westminster is far beyond what my honest brain can fathom.

Daniel Vince-Archer

Why so cynical Kris? I haven't read the article (is it available online Editor?) so probably shouldn't comment but I imagine that Fox was probably asked to comment on 'smearing' or 'drug allegations' or something like that and his response has been blown out of proportion by an overexcited media as usual.

malcolm

Fox says that he wouldn't comment about events in his private life unless they were illegal.I'm afraid Daniel,it looks like as an earlier poster mentioned a clear dig at Cameron. Before you jump down my throat,I'm not a Cameronite!

Graeme Wilson

I have known Liam Fox for a few years now, and I know him to be an exceptionally bright, passionate and capable man. He is, quite rightly, firmly of the belief that he is entitled to a private life that is exactly that- private. Personally I beleive this to be a deliberatley timed smear campaign and is not in anyway relevant to the contest.

Good Luck Liam.

Daniel Vince-Archer

Don't worry Malcolm D, I wouldn't tar you with that brush ;-)

Foxy could have been asked how he would have reacted to drug allegations or something like that. Again, I haven't seen the article and I wasn't present at the interview so I don't know if this would be the case or not.

RobD

Having seen the article it looks to me as if Fox brough this on himself. Of course the Standard have blown it up but what do you expect when faced with such an ambiguous comment. This issue shouldn't matter at all and I don't think it would matter if Fox had not raised it.

Michael Smith

Fox says that he wouldn't comment about events in his private life unless they were illegal.I'm afraid Daniel,it looks like as an earlier poster mentioned a clear dig at Cameron.

I'd have said there is a thin line between Fox making 'a dig at Cameron' and something much more anodyne, which is simply making a distinction between the types of question he would and would not answer.

This is the point about Cameron's alleged drug use - it isn't just about his private life, it's about his attitude towards the rule of law. Whereas none of the stories about Fox seem to involve anything remotely illegal, which is why I'm amazed that anyone could get even slightly worked up about them.

Andrew

Why is any of this even an issue?

Oberon Houston

Good point, Foxie is getting quite worked up though, as him whether the members should get a vote or not this afternoon and he'll explode into a thousand tiny stars.

btw, here is a poser for you, the re-forcast for growth by the Treasury of 2.5%... is this the 2.5% growth in public spending the Tories set aside in the Election manifesto, but Labour called the £35bn bombshell?

henry curteis

If some one's making the effort to smear Foxy he must be upsetting someone by his progress. This is a sign he's made the cut. A Cameron Fox playoff will be fantastic fun to watch. Beat the cricket any day!

malcolm

Nothing beats the cricket Henry.Be serious!

Oberon Houston

Stop.

Reality check. Are we really saying Fox is a credible leader of the Party?

I think we are in danger of sliding through the looking glass; again.

Henry Cook

The more I think about this story, the more flummoxed I become. Does someone know of an online link to the article? Could someone briefly summarise what Fox was asked, or whether he just decided to come out with it?? Why would he do that? Why would anyone ask him anyway? Have there ever been any rumours of that kind before, cos I haven't heard them. Utterly bizarre. Someone's clearly lost it, but I don't know who.

Hack

Speaking as a hack working in Westminster we all suspect Fox has raised it to pre-empt something the Sundays are poised to run with.
There is no revelation in the story that DD's team coulld have planted and everyone already knew all the rumours.
Either Fox raised it himself or its a good, old fashioned journo ambush that he didn't handle well.

Cllr Iain Lindley

Whereas none of the stories about Fox seem to involve anything remotely illegal, which is why I'm amazed that anyone could get even slightly worked up about them.

Alas, when Fox went to University homosexual activity would have been illegal for 90% of undergraduates, and furthermore it would still be if Dr Fox's chums in Cornerstone had their way...

That said, this is even more of a non-issue than drugs nonsense.

Daniel Vince-Archer

"Alas, when Fox went to University homosexual activity would have been illegal for 90% of undergraduates."

Yes, but (rightly IMHO) it isn't illegal now, unlike, for example, smoking pot or snorting cocaine...

Oberon Houston

Is smoking Pot illegal?

Henry Cook

Is smoking cannabis illegal now? I thought it was illegal to sell it, buy it or own it, but not to smoke it. I'm probably wrong, but I thought that was the case, however stupid a policy that sounds.
