Today’s Telegraph suggests that the Party Board and representatives of the 1922 Committee of Conservative MPs have reached an agreement to scrap grassroots members’ voting rights.
The Party Board – which purports to represent grassroots members – has reportedly agreed that a two week consultation period (conducted by association chairmen) will replace William Hague’s one-member-one-vote system. The consultation will focus on a list of leadership contenders drawn up by MPs. To get on that list candidates for the leadership will need to be nominated by 5% of MPs.
The 1922 Committee will vote next week on the revised proposals. As reported on Tuesday a blocking third of MPs can stop this disenfranchisement of members. If the MPs approve the rule changes they will go before the National Convention of Association Chairmen, MEPs and MPs etc in September.
