David Cracknell, Political Editor of The Sunday Times, has put flesh onto the bones of this blog's speculation of a fortnight ago. Mr Cracknell confirms that Ken Clarke and David Cameron have met to discuss a possible 'dream ticket':
"Kenneth Clarke has held talks with the youngest serious contender for the Tory leadership with a view to forming a possible “dream ticket” of experience and youth to challenge David Davis, the current front-runner. The former chancellor last week met David Cameron, the 38-year-old shadow education secretary who has been tipped as the Conservatives’ version of Tony Blair. The talks were encouraged by senior figures in Michael Howard’s camp who believe that Clarke, 64, could “train up” a relatively young and inexperienced Cameron."
The involvement of aides to Michael Howard will infuriate David Davis' camp. Relations between the Davis and Howard teams are already frosty.
"Sources close to Cameron played down the idea of a dream ticket," however. Mr Cameron apparently believes that he has enough support to run on his own.
