« An independent Scottish Conservative Party? | Main | Have French voters helped Ken Clarke's leadership bid? »

Sir Malcolm Rifkind would simply be seen as a back to the past leader and frankly that is the last thing the party needs.

James Hellyer

It's unsurprising that Sir Malcolm's stock would rise following his parliamentary performance. He is, after all, a skilled parliamentarian and debater.

There remains the question of how he performs outside the Commons. I remember his performance on Newsnight just after the election when he was described as "a Michael Howard tribute band."

Then there are the small matter of just what exactly he believes in...

Edward

At the moment most people seem to think the main criteria for leadership are not being Davis or Clarke and he wins both of those.

I listened to Malcolm Rifkind's comments this morning on 'A week in Westminster' about the BNP and people's fears about housing, work and immigration. I must say that some years back where I lived in Camden I was removed from my two bedrooms flat to a one bedroom flat while repairs were being done with the assurance that I would be allowed back into it. I wasn't and Camden Council duly put a Bangladeshi family in it.
So it seems that taking responsibility for planning my family was given second place to an overseas family. Bet this has never happened to him. It's always the same lecture from those in positions of power and privilege, don't do what I do but do as I say and they always know better than you. The Kings Cross area of London is now a Bangladeshi Muslim ghetto. I am not a Muslim. I am an 'ethnic minority' as a Scot so I should get help. Alas no not even as an over 60. I recently applied for a teaching post in an Indian organisation in London but it was given to a young man from Delhi. So much for multi-culturalism. Post colonial guilt gone mad! To be international we have to have something to be 'inter' about!
MR Rifkin get in the real world as should all politicians.
The class and race issue is a fine line. In fact Stalin wrote a few chapters on it!
Sincerely
Clem Alford
