David Cameron is by far the strongest asset the Tory Party has. People like him and warm to him and can relate to him, especially so after his and Samantha's tragic loss.
I expect the Labour campaign at the next election to mirror John Major's 1997 campaign against Blair, i.e. the leader's changed but the party's still the same. That campaign probably had a degree of success but it's hard to assess how much difference it made with the result being so overwhelming. A closer election next year and it may be a deciding factor.
