Immediate reactions to David Laws' resignation

The Coalition has lost an incredibly effective Chief Secretary. He was ideally suited to the task of restoring health to the public finances. As he said in his statement; his whole life, in economics, politics and banking had appeared an ideal preparation for this task.

The sharks on Fleet Street will now be encircling The Coalition. Having tasted blood so quickly they'll want more.

David Laws left much better paid work for public service. He kept his domestic arrangements secret because he was an intensely private individual. He broke the rules, yes, but not for financial gain.
