David Cameron's commitment to the Union is demonstrated with an eve-of-poll visit to Northern Ireland

Picture 25 It was great to see David Cameron taking in Northern Ireland today as part of his final campaigning marathon, not least because a visit to the province earlier in the campaign had to be abandoned due to flight restrictions caused by the the ash cloud (and he only just made it today after more restrictions were imposed on flying overnight).

He spoke at an election rally at the La Mon Hotel in the Strangford constituency and reiterated the message that the party has been pushing in Northern Ireland - that only by voting for the Conservatives and Unionists can people vote for someone who will play a full role in British politics and potentially have the chance to serve in a UK government:

"Our two parties have created a new dynamic force for Northern Ireland. We are not just saying that we are the party of the union, we are showing that we are the party of the union, the party of Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England - with candidates standing in every part of the United Kingdom. Nobody else can say that. Not Labour. Not the Liberal Democrats."

He emphasised his commitment to the union, stating:

"I will never be neutral on the Union. We passionately believe that England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are stronger together, weaker apart - and the union of our two parties strengthens those bonds."

He also pledged that Northern Ireland would certainly not be singled out when it comes to making judgements about the need to find savings in public spending, he vowed to help increase the size of the private sector and said there would no be more "costly inquries" into historic events in Northern Ireland, saying that he would "draw a line under the past".

He concluded by re-iterating his commitment to Northern Ireland by promising the gathering:

"If I become Prime Minister, I'll be back in a week."

I have long been a supporter of the link-up with the UUP and sincerely hope that on Friday morning there will be MPs taking the Conservaitve whip from constituencies in Northern Ireland. This visit by the Conservative Party leader on the eve of the election will certainly have given our candidates a timely boost.
