Boris pays his first visit to David Cameron in Downing Street

Tonight's Evening Standard carries the great photo above of London Mayor Boris Johnson turning up at 10 Downing Street, having made his way there on his trusty bike.

According to the paper's report, this visit was merely a "social call", but I dare say it won't be Boris's last meeting with the Prime Minister there - and that future official encounters will see the mayor fighting London's corner when money is increasingly tight.

There are more photos from today on the Standard website.

> 6.15pm update:

I am informed that whilst David Cameron did joke with the London Mayor about keeping the Downing Street chair warm for him, there has been some serious discussion in recent days between Boris and both the Prime Minister and Chancellor about the need not to hit London hard in terms of cuts.

Sources close to the Mayor report that he has forcefully put the case that apart from not wanting to have the engine of the British economy starved of fuel, he has - as a Conservative mayor - spent the last two years making the kinds of savings on travel, unnecessary jobs and so on in his administration at City Hall which the Government now wants made across the nation.
