Michael Martin to resign this afternoon

Picture 70 A big victory for Douglas Carswell.

Labour will likely face a very difficult by-election.

My own choice for Speaker would be Frank Field.  He is a man of great independence and integrity.  He has argued for a strengthened House of Commons.  He is a very good communicator.  I just don't know if he wants it.

11am: James Landale (great to see him back after his cancer scare) is saying that The Speaker may not leave the Chair immediately but will give time for successor candidates to put forward their own platforms.

11.40am: Adam Boulton on Sky confirms Michael Martin will resign and will leave chair before the summer. He does however wish to press ahead with his meetings with the party leaders and put in place a reform process that allows him some dignity in the final days of his Speakership.
