The Alternative Queen's Speech 13: Trade Union Members' Bill
This is the thirteenth of fifteen draft Bills in an Alternative Queen's Speech that sets out what a legislative programme might have looked like if a majority Conservative government had been elected. Read more about the initiative here.
Trade unions shouldn't be run by their leaders or any one political party. They should be run by their members and for their members. Industrial action shouldn't be forced on all of a union by a small minority of members' votes. Strike action should only be legal if 50% of a union membership participates in a ballot. It is also wrong that union members are automatically assumed to want their political levy to go the Labour Party. Trade unions should be given the option of donating their political levy to a range of political and campaigning causes.
