Cllr Julian Grainger writes:
Simon Fawthrop’s “Communities First” message is in contrast to the one size fits all approach of Labour Livingstone.
Simon is a Councillor in the London Borough of Bromley, a part of Outer London - where Livingstone hardly ever dares venture.
To emphasise Greater London’s village origins and community nature, Simon has the audacity to base his campaign HQ in Chelsfield (Kent) – just a few miles inside the M25
Many people forget that Greater London is not all zone one.
“Unlike some campaigns I want to appeal to Outer London, as this is Livingstone’s Achilles Heel” he says. While Simon sees the mainly Conservative Outer London as fertile territory he believes that too few Conservatives vote in London-wide elections as they fail to see the relevance of Livingstone or the GLA. “Nobody locally goes home to London” says Simon.
The London suburbs have been under attack from Labour in recent years. Livingstone is at the forefront of Labour’s campaign to build the suburbs out of London, introducing the London Plan with zealous enthusiasm.
