Iain Dale has an extraordinary exclusive on his blog. Francis Maude is allegedly attempting to put Greg Dyke forward as a joint Tory/ LibDem Mayoral candidate. Mr Dyke, who left Labour for the LibDems, is apparently "up for it". All the details are on Iain's blog.
Press Association update:
"Former BBC Director General Greg Dyke tonight quashed speculation that he would run for London Mayor as a joint Liberal Democrat-Conservative candidate. After a day of fevered political intrigue in which the prospect was discussed face-to-face by Tory leader David Cameron and his opposite number Sir Menzies Campbell, Mr Dyke finally ruled out a challenge. "The only way I'd win was to get an agreement between political parties, and there wasn't one to be had," he told Sky News. The Liberal Democrats said they had dismissed the notion as unworkable, insisting that London "deserved a liberal choice"."
