Conservative council candidate nominates Independent candidate standing against him and his Tory colleague

By Jonathan Isaby

I wrote in October 2009 about ructions within the Bedford Conservatives, when the group leader on the local council, Nicky Attenborough, was suspended from the party.

And these divisions have now resurfaced very publicly in advance of the local elections in Bedford next month, as reported by Bedford Today.

There are two vacancies for the Kempston Central and East ward of Bedford Borough council and there are two candidates from each of the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties, along with Nicky Attenborough, who is standing as an Independent.

But get this:

  • Conservative candidate Steve Collins has nominated Nicky Attenborough;
  • Nine of those nominating Attenborough have also nominated the other Conservative candidate, Robert Rigby; and
  • The tenth name on Rigby's nomination form is... Nicky Attenborough
