Full Council by-election results from yesterday

Last night Welsh Conservatives gained a Council seat from the Liberal Democrats in one of the last electoral tests before the Assembly elections.  The Newton ward, in the marginal Gower constituency of Welsh Assembly Health Minister Edwina Hart, hasn't been held by the Conservatives since the early 1980s. The constituency was held by Labour in this year's General Election. The ward comes under Swansea Council.

Welcoming the by-election news, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives on Swansea Council, René Kinzett said:

"This is a disappointing result for the Lib Dem-led Council, which has failed to improve public services for the people of Swansea.

"This win for the Welsh Conservatives in Newton shows voters are looking to the Party for a positive and progressive alternative in Swansea.

"This was also a bad result for Labour in the Health Minister's backyard and will give the party cause for concern ahead of May's Assembly elections."

The result was:

Miles Thomas (Welsh Conservative): 545
Lib Dem: 299
Labour: 187
Independent: 108
Plaid Cymru: 31

2008 Result:
Liberal Democrat 718
Welsh Conservative 497
Green Party 115
