Conservative councillor charged with bigamy

Cllr Pervez Choudhry has stood down as leader of the Conservative Group on Slough Borough Council after being arrested for bigamy.

Apparently Cllr Peter Dale-Gough, the acting leader of Slough Borough Council's Conservative group, says Cllr Choudhry has told him that he and his first wife took part in a religious ceremony but were not married by law as no civil ceremony took place.

Cllr Choudhry says:

"I can't comment on the context of the case but I can say without any hesitation that I have done nothing illegal and I'm vigorously going to defend that. We have decided that I am going to step down and retake my responsibilities when I clear my name."

Co-Editor's note: Due to impending legal proceedings, I have opted to close coments on this thread.
