Hyndburn freezes Council Tax

Last night Hyndburn became the latest Conservative council to freeze the Council Tax. The council leader Cllr Peter Britcliffe said before the meeting:

“Just in the next financial year we must make £1 million of savings and I am calling on all councillors and staff to unite and come forward with ideas to cut costs and keep council tax low.

“Over the next four weeks it is vital that we all join together to find the cost reductions that the people of Hyndburn need.”

But rather than respond to his bipartisan appeal, the Labour councillors proposed a 1.5% increase.

Savings already identified include £345,000 in Policy and Corporate Governance - the breakdown ranging from £14,000 by buying fewer copies of the Lancashire Evening Post, £12,000 on mobile phone calls and £44,033 on Legal Services "restructuring."
