Volunteer shepherds in Brighton and Hove

Sheepatwaterhall Pleased to see a report in The Guardian today about an initiative by Conservative run Brighton and Hove Council to keep down the Council Tax. They have recruited volunteer shepherds. The scheme is that sheep are loaned from local farms to graze on Council land adjacent to schools and housing estates. There are 73 shepherd's on the Council roster which it is hoped will dramatically cut the Council annual £25,000 bill for grass cutting and baling. The urban shpeherd scheme costs £1,800 a year to run - volunteers are given a one day training course by a professional shepherd.

Cllr Maria Caulfied, a Conservative councillor, is among the shepherds. Good for her.
