Greenwich Council keep The Queen hidden in cupboard
The campaign to resist creeping republicanism in our Town Halls by ensuring a portrait of the Queen is displayed in council chambers or Town Hall foyers has reached Greenwich. Cllr Nigel Fletcher, a Conservative opposition councillor on the Labour Council has found a portrait of The Queen in a cupboard. At present it is only taken out for citizenship ceremonies. Cllr Fletcher wants it on permanent display.
The Council leader, Cllr Chris Roberts has refused saying he doesn't want to "politicise" the monarchy. If this concern was sincere then he should agree to the request thus avoiding any dispute. This is what his Labour colleagues in Tower Hamlets have done, which is to their credit.
