Council Tax burden on elderly has nearly doubled under Labour.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Council Tax burden has nearly doubled for pensioners since 1995.

A study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies concludes there has been an increase of 84% between 1995 and 2007. The share of the budget for pensioners that goes on Council Tax went up from 4.5% to 7.2%. That meant a bill of £21 a week.

For non pensioners that Council Tax as a share of income rose from 2.9% to 4.4% over the same period.

Councillors should keep in mind that pensioners have a greater tendency to vote.
