Street Pastor scheme for Worthing

Worthing is introducing a Street Pastor scheme where Christians in high visibility jackets patrol the streets after dark. There is concern about the vulnerability of young people coming home from night clubs after a 23-year-old was electrocuted after falling on a live rail after being ejected from a club.

The initiative is being championed by Cllr Noel Atkins, a Conservative councillor and the new Mayor of Worthing. The Street Pastors will seek to ensure those the "worse for wear" get home safely. There are a hundred Street Pastor schemes in the country pioneered by the Ascension Trust which says there has been a drop in crime where they operate.
