Thurrock scraps 50% parking charge hike

Thurrock Council has abandoned plans for a 50% increase in parking charges in response to the pleas of local traders.

There is an irony in this decision. It was a rebellion against the charges by Conservative Councillors Danny Nicklen (Stanford East and Corringham Town ward) and Eddie Hardiman (Stanford-le-Hope West ward) that partly caused the resignation and switching to Labour of previous Leader Councillor Terry Hipsey. Having tried to push through the charges to the dismay of his Conservative colleagues Cllr Hipsey has now put in place a minority Labour administration which is abandoning them.

So a victory for true Conservative policies - albeit one achieved in a rather confusing way.

I'm afraid I was particularly confused. Despite Cllr Hipsey defection, Thurrock remains, for the moment at least, a Conservative Council.
