Oxford Labour councillors in campaign to abolish the monarchy

Two Labour councillors in Oxford, Cllr John Tanner and Cllr David Williams are holding a rally in support of abolition of the monarchy. Cllr Tanner says replacing the monarchy with an elected President would save 90% of the cost of the Civil List. Not sure which countries elected presidents he has looked at to come up with this projected saving. Nor is it clear what his response is to the point that The Queen hands over most of the Crown Estates revenue in return for the Civil List payment.

Given that Labour-run Oxford City Council is hiking the Council Tax by 4.5% leaving a Band D bill of over £1,500 they are not best placed to accuse The Queen of poor value for money.

Cllr Williams is a Green Party councillor.
