Broadland Council spends £30,000 on plane to spot energy wasters

Tory-run Broadland District Council has spent £30,000 on hiring a plane with thermal imaging camera to identify poorly insulated homes and offices. It will produce a colour coded map so they an identify the least energy efficient buildings. I hope they will use the data to ensure their own premises are energy efficient. Councils are often quick to lecture residents about this sort of thing while doing little to cut their own energy bill.

The Council says it will use the information particularly for helping elderly people on low incomes who may be unaware of the insulation grants they are entitled to. But I think they will also let the rest of us know if our home or office is very wasteful of energy. Is this gross impertinence? Or information we might be grateful to know about?
