Wyre Forest Council cuts staff

M_hart The Birmingham Post reports that Conservative-run Wyre Forest District Council is proposing cutting 125 posts. The Deputy Leader, Cllr Marcus Hart, is quoted as saying that "the credit crunch means that we have to redouble our efforts to be more efficient." He adds that the search for savings will include "a review of divisional management structures."

Hats off to Cllr Hart (pictured.)

Like anyone else, if a Council has money on deposit low interest rates are bad news - it is has an overdraft they are a help. Like many Councils, Wyre Forest can be criticised for having invested in Icelandic banks. But they are to be commended for taking responsibility for their actions. The easy thing would have been to pass on the bill to the Council Taxpayers. Instead they are looking for where they can save money. Such a response would be obvious for any business or household. It is not always the case for Councils.
