From the Sunday Telegraph Waste Watch column

In the Sunday Telegraph's Waste Watch, Lib Dem led Exeter Council has been exposed for spending £172,000 on modernist public art in Heavitree Fore Street. It included £73,000 on a glass and metal sculpture and paying someone £4,000 to write a poem.

Also there is an item on Conservative/Independent-run Staffordshire Moorlands District Council spending £400,000 on a village shed. Cllr Andrew Hart, an independent councillor and regeneration portfolio holder, said the project had been going for years and that it would have cost more to cancel it as EU grants would have had to be paid back. We do seem to have a problem with Councils tempted to undertake wasteful projects because of tantalising funding from the EU or central Government.
