Council housing. A lifetime in dependency?
Reports that Housing Minister Margaret Beckett is dithering over whether of not to proceed with the plans of her predecessor Caroline Flint that council homes could be provided with fixed-term contracts and regular reviews every few years. At present Council tenants can continue to enjoy their subsidised housing regardless of how rich they might become. It is right that that should change. Although the details will be important to get right if we don't have the alternative problem of Council tenants avoiding work for fear of losing their homes if they earn too much money.
