Earlier this week YouGov completed a large poll of 1,906 representative British voters on behalf of ConservativeHome. We will be publishing most of the results in the run up to the Tory party conference but, on the eve of the Lib Dems' gathering in Brighton, here are the results of questions comparing the standing of Nick Clegg, Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats in general.

The results in the graph and table are the numbers agreeing that the LDs/ Clegg/ Cable possesses a certain quality minus those who do not.

Although Vince Cable is only in positive territory on two measures - ability to take tough decisions and concern for the vulnerable - he's streets ahead of Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats on all five of the qualities we measured. If the Liberal Democrats are looking for a leader who can increase their electoral competitiveness these are powerful numbers.
