Labour will announce its 2012 London mayoral candidate on September 22nd

The theory I mooted the other day about Diane Abbott running for Labour leader as a dry-run for her party's  London Mayoral nomination has been comprehensively shot down.

The reason being, that the contests will run concurrently.

Labour's timetable for choosing a London Mayoral candidate is, according to the Press Association, as follows:

  • Nominations open - now
  • Deadline for nominations - June 18
  • Shortlisting of candidates by panel - June 24
  • Result announced - September 22
