Alistair Darling contradicts his deputy on tax

Picture 7 On Friday, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Liam Byrne, was quoted as ruling out tax rises if Labour were re-elected.

Fast forward 48 hours and his boss, Chancellor Alistair Darling, refused to make such a commitment when challenged on the issue by Adam Boulton on Sky News this morning.

All he would say was:

"No Chancellor wants to have to put up income tax."

Very illuminating...
