Alistair Darling contradicts his deputy on tax
On Friday, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Liam Byrne, was quoted as ruling out tax rises if Labour were re-elected.
Fast forward 48 hours and his boss, Chancellor Alistair Darling, refused to make such a commitment when challenged on the issue by Adam Boulton on Sky News this morning.
All he would say was:
"No Chancellor wants to have to put up income tax."
