The Commons Speaker, John Bercow, launched his bid for re-election in his Buckingham constituency yesterday with official backing from all three main political parties, including explicit messages of support from David Cameron and the chairman of Buckingham Conservative association.
The Bucks Herald reports David Cameron as saying:
"John Bercow is a hard-working constituency MP, who continues to take up cases and support local issues. So in this election I would certainly urge all Conservatives – and, indeed, supporters of all parties and of none – to vote for the Speaker, John Bercow."
James Younger, chairman of the Buckingham Conservatives, adds:
"Since 1997, John has proved to be a hard working and dedicated MP; above all he has built up a formidable reputation as our local 'champion' in expediting constituents' concerns with tenacity and speed. John continues to be as active and energetic as ever in our constituency, which includes visiting and supporting schools, hospitals, charities and businesses. We should be proud in Buckingham that John is Speaker MP."
Amen to all of that.
My support for John Bercow is well known and I have written before that any Conservative considering backing the candidacy of UKIP's Nigel Farage in Buckingham is being drawn into a political stunt which not only disrespects the office of Speaker, but will have the effect of undermining the Conservative Party.
