Conservative candidates have tonight been selected for three seats in south east Wales:
- Blaenau Gwent - Liz Stevenson contests the only seat in Wales where the Conservatives lost their deposit in 2005 (attaining 2.3% of the vote and coming fifth). It is held by Independent Dai Davies with a majority of 9,121 over Labour
- Islwyn - Dan Thomas will contest the seat, which Labour's Don Touhig recently announced he would be vacating at the election. There is a notional Labour majority of 17,582 over Plaid Cymru, with the Conservatives starting in fourth place.
- Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney - Maria Hill will stand in the seat held for Labour by Dai Havard with a majority of 13,934 over the Lib Dems, with the Conservaitves in fourth place.
