No. 29: Sir Stephen Sherbourne
A reader from London writes:
"I would like to nominate Sir Stephen Sherbourne, who has held a number of positions in Tory politics over the years.
"He is best known for having been Margaret Thatcher's political secretary at Number Ten between 1983 and 1988, and more recently was Michael Howard's Chief of Staff between 2003 and 2005. But te also worked for Edward Heath after he relinquished the party leadership in 1975 and for John Major during the 1992 general election.
"After stints as a teacher and at a merchant bank, he worked at the Conservative Research Department and was a Special Adviser at the Department for Industry in the early 1980s. After leaving Number Ten, he worked at Bell Pottinger and was a main board director of its holding company, Chime Communications. Since 2005 has been working in his own communications business.
"He does not have a Tory enemy in the world, is universally liked across the party and would have much to contribute to the House of Lords."
Sir Stephen is also on the policy advisory board of the Social Market Foundation.
