No. 10: Robert Edmiston
A reader from the West Midlands writes:
"I would nominate philanthropist and businessman, Robert "Bob" Edmiston, who was nominated for a peerage by Michael Howard. Unfortunately he became a victim of Downing Street's tit for tat response to the cash-for-honours enquiry. It is high time that Mr Edmiston was ennobled as he has so much to offer the Conservative Party from the House of Lords.
"Mr Edmiston is Chairman of IM Group - employing several hundred people - and the Midlands Industrial Council. However, the sums he has given to charity vastly outweigh anything he has given to the Conservatives. Mr Edmiston has already given in excess of £100m to charity (including Christian charities such as his own, Christian Vision) and, like Lord Ashcroft, has pledged to give the majority of his wealth to charity. He is an Academy sponsor. He has supported the Conservative Party vocally through thick and thin since the '70s. Now in his early sixties, he would be a regular attendee of the House of Lords as an active working Conservative peer. We need peers who will turn up and work hard - and that is precisely what Mr Edmiston would do."
