No. 11: Andy Street
A reader writes:
"Andy Street read PPE at Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association, but unlike many who then went straight into politics, he has had a real and successful life outside.
" After leaving Oxford, he joined the John Lewis Partnership as a graduate trainee and has now risen to become Managing Director of this successful multi-billion pound retail group - the only retailer currently to be gaining market share in a recession.
"From around 16 until the age of 40 he worked with Birmingham Young Volunteers (BYV) taking, each year, deprived children nominated by Birmingham Social Services to Wales for adventure camps. He eventually became Chairman of BYV.
"Meanwhile, to keep fit, he drops Conservative leaflets in local elections to all the homes in his village
and at the 1992 general election, he was unpaid agent to Damian Green in Brent East."Andy Street is the sort of successful and dynamic person our party needs in the Lords."
