Rehman Chishti has been selected for Gillingham and Rainham - a seat with a projected Conservative majority of 500.
Cllr Chishti defected to the Conservatives just a year ago. He was recruited to the party from Labour by Francis Maude and was immediately made the Party Chairman's diversity adviser. He fought as the Labour candidate at the 2005 election against Mr Maude in Horsham.
The Conservative leadership is determined to send a message to other potential defectors that they will be welcomed into the party. In January Wirral South Conservatives adopted LibDem defector Jeff Clarke as their candidate.
9.25pm update: Vicky Ford, a finalist in the selection, has blogged the result here.
