I said I wasn't going to report on GLA selections but here I am - doing it again. Yesterday evening 400 Conservatives chose Kit Malthouse to succeed Angie Bray as the Conservative candidate for the London West Central seat. He beat Nick Paget-Brown, Victoria Borwick and Shirley Houghton. Many congratulations to Kit.
I'm struck by the good attendance number. Again and again I hear of parliamentary selection meetings where attendance falls short of triple figures. The party introduced open primaries (rightly in my opinion) to reduce the power of these small 'selectorates'. I'm thinking of compiling a paper on the open primary process - its strengths and weaknesses. Has it succeeded in increasing attendance? Has it brought representative people into the selection process? If you have observations please email them to me here.
