Lady Thatcher was not able to be there herself, because of flu, but David Cameron's party in her honour went ahead. The former PM, Mr Cameron said, had to be ordered to stay in bed such was her determination to attend. In a statement it was noted that, sadly, the Lady is not for returning tonight... but the party will be rarranged soon.
For 10 Downing Street this was not just an occasion to salute the Iron Lady, it was also another part of Team Cameron's effort to build better relations with the Conservative Right. Listed below is a pretty comprehensive list of attendees - apologies to any we have missed off.
In his unscripted remarks Mr Cameron paid tribute to the greatest peacetime Prime Minister of the twentieth century. She made Britain proud again, he said, and saved the British economy. He remembered listening to the radio as a boy of fifteen during the Falkland Wars. The assembly gave a loud 'hear, hear' to his tribute to her "courage and conviction".
He reminded the audience of Lady Thatcher's answer to Hugo Swire's question "What would you now do differently if given another chance?" "I think I did rather well first time round," she replied!
It was a very good and generous speech from Mr Cameron - who was guided about the room by Chief Whip Patrick McLoughlin. Tributes to Margaret Thatcher's record did, however, tend to get a warmer response than defences of his own government's agenda.
Mr Cameron left the two hour reception early with Liam Fox. Defence and education are two of the outstanding budgets yet to be settled before next Wednesday's CSR.
