"Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie has called for the law on double jeopardy to be changed so that a person can be tried twice for the same crime.  In England the 800-year-old principle was abolished in 2005, meaning people could face trial again if new and compelling evidence emerged.  The Conservatives want to see similar changes introduced in Scotland." - BBC

ROAD PRICING PETITION WINS ONE MILLION SIGNATORIES

"More than one million people have signed an online petition against plans to introduce road charging in the UK.  The petition, which is the most popular on the Downing Street website, calls for the scrapping of "planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy".  But No 10 has insisted that doing nothing would lead to a 25% increase in congestion "in less than a decade"." - BBC

NAUGHTY UKIP

"The United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) is being investigated by the election watchdog over alleged financial irregularities.  The Electoral Commission is concerned that the euro-sceptic party has filed its most recent accounts more than six months late. It is also probing a series of "separate issues".  The commission refused to provide details of its inquiries, but more than £1 million has been given to Ukip in three years which is not recorded on the watchdog's register." - Sunday Telegraph

HAIN HINTS AT RETURN OF CONFISCATORY TAXATION

"City high-fliers should lose two thirds of their bonuses to deprived communities, claims Peter Hain, a candidate for Labour's deputy leadership. Their firms could otherwise face heavier regulation and tax.  The Northern Ireland Secretary said that multi-million-pound bonuses created a "grotesque" wealth gap that fuelled envy and crime.  In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, he warned companies to take action to self regulate or face "a big fight"."
