Adam Smith Institute blog: "Here's one policy proposal for the Tory Globalization and Global Poverty Group. Set a deadline for the EU to scrap the CAP. If it isn't met, make it clear that we will pull out of the CAP unilaterally, forcing its collapse as we would no longer fund the subsidies."
Platform blog: James Mawdsley advocates a bolder, more self-enlightened Conservative foreign policy.
DAVID CAMERON'S PROMISE TO STAND UP TO BIG BUSINESS
FT leader: "Polls show that the Conservatives are seen as being in hock to big business and too unconcerned about entrepreneurs and ordinary people. It is entirely right that governments - of right or left - should be prepared to challenge large companies with effective competition policies necessary to foster a dynamic free-market economy. Mr Cameron deserves criticism, however, for not spelling out what he means. His desire to change the face of the Conservatives is commendable and must succeed if the party is to win back the trust of voters. But without more substance, the risk is that he looks like a watered down version of Mr Blair and alienates wealth-creators whose support is so important."
CHARLES KENNEDY'S WOES
Daily Mail: "Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy was under renewed pressure after one of the party's most senior MPs urged him to call a vote of confidence or leadership contest to decide his future. Environment spokesman Norman Baker said it was time to bring the leadership issue to a head, and called on Mr Kennedy to do so within the coming week. Mr Baker is the most senior Lib Dem publicly to demand a vote on Mr Kennedy's future, after weeks of reports of internal dissatisfaction with his performance."
CANNABIS
Daily Mail: "Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he was "very worried" about new medical evidence linking cannabis consumption with mental health problems. His comment came just weeks ahead of an expected announcement on whether he will reverse predecessor David Blunkett's controversial decision to downgrade the drug from class B to class C. It is the strongest indication yet that he is preparing to restore cannabis to the more serious category, less than a year after reclassification took effect."
ABRAMOFF SCANDAL
Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal) hopes that the Abramoff affair might pull the Republican Party off the road to big government.
