Cavemen Conservatives can talk about Europe, crime and tax but have nothing to say about poverty, the environment and the public services.
Cavemen Conservatives don’t have much imagination. Beating away at the few keys that remain on their outdated typewriters they produce the same old, unimaginative policies on tax, Europe, crime and immigration. Ask them on to the Today programme to talk about these issues and they’ll bore for England. Ask them to tell you what they think about broader issues like the arms trade, environmental decay or pensioner poverty and they're unlikely to have anything (positive) to say.
Cavemen Conservatives are half-right and half-clueless. Conservatives should believe in low tax, national sovereignty, a tough approach to crime and protected national borders. But true Conservatives have much more to offer. The ‘And theory of conservatism’ helps Conservatives to deepen their core beliefs by also renewing the historical Conservative interest in, for example, environmental protection and social reform.
