Appeasement processes encourage a new generation of terrorists to believe that violence provides a back door to political power.
The Provisional IRA thinks of Tony Blair as a useful idiot. And Charles Moore, writing for The Daily Telegraph, listed* some of the reasons why:
“Since the peace process began, the IRA has killed soldiers; it has broken into the Castlereagh headquarters of Special Branch, taking the names of informants; it has been involved in gun-running in Florida and terrorist instruction in Colombia; it has infiltrated the government buildings at Stormont, stealing confidential information and intercepting ministerial conversations. All the while, it has continued to organise crime, north and south of the border - armed robbery, cigarette smuggling, punishment beatings and the exiling of individuals whom it doesn't like. And now it grabs £26.5 million.”
The idea that the British state’s surrender to the IRA should be called a ‘peace process’ is a sick joke. The peace process is one of the most dishonest of ’Don’t Think Of An Elephant!’ terms. What reasonable person can be against motherhood, apple pie, world peace, or something called the peace process?
Melanie Phillips says the road to and from the Good Friday Agreement should more accurately be described as an appeasement process. Taking a cue from Charles Moore’s article she notes the mafia state that Northern Ireland has become. The IRA’s offer to shoot the killers of Robert McCartney exposed the fiction of the Good Friday ceasefire and the gaping hole in New Labour’s homeland security credentials.
Oslo
There has also been the post-Oslo appeasement process in the Middle East. Ms Phillips argues that the EU-funded Palestinian Authority became an instrument of enormous violence in the hands of Yasser Arafat – an unreconstructed terrorist.
Melanie Phillips does not believe that there should be any negotiation with terrorists. She argues that “terrorism is violence as theatre… Its aim is to attract attention.” The more terrorists are included in ‘peace processes’, the more terrorists will think their murderous campaigns worthwhile. Phillips concludes:
”The cause of terror is the fact that terrorists know that it works – first as a means of attracting attention, and then as a route to power. Terrorism gave Sinn Fein its place in the [Northern Ireland] Assembly. Terrorism gave Arafat his place in the Oslo accords.”
