Many people - Tony Blair, Ken Livingstone, Steve Redgrave, The Princess Royal, David Beckham - deserve credit for winning the Olympics for Britain.
But I'd like to suggest that two people deserve a special mention...
Lord Coe - the chairman of the bid. The Tory peer took over what was widely seen as a flagging bid and took London to victory. A fantastic achievement for William Hague's former Chief of Staff and an ideal springboard to a run for London Mayor?
But let's also pay tribute to Jacques Chirac. His rudeness at Britain's expense may just have given London the edge. Paris was beaten by 54 to 50 votes. France's embattled President wasn't just rude about British cooking - he singled out Finland for special disdain. It would be great to think that the Finns - and one or two other IOC members - might have been influenced by his unsporting intervention.
And, yes, I know it's childish, but did you see some of those jokes in today's Mail...
Why do so many Frenchmen have moustaches?
To remind them of their mothers.
What do you call a Frenchman advancing on Baghdad?
A salesman.
Why do French ships have glass bottoms?
To see all their other ships.
Where is the best place to hide your money?
Under a Frenchman's soap.
and finally... The Tour de France is so popular in France because it is the one sport where you don't need balls!
I think its excellent news that London as won the 2012 Olympics but I think there is a downside for the Conservative Party in this news as this is bound to create a newfound confidence in the country that will make people feel good about this country and unite it. I don`t think you can over estimate the political benefit this news will have for the government.
The conservatives had a huge mountain to climb before this news that mountain is a hell of a lot higher now.
If the conservatives are to stand a chance they will need a young, charastmatic leader who can enfuse people and convince people that the party is a party for the whole nation. That man is not David Davis.

I think Mr Stone is being a little churlish. Any sound Tory can rejoice in another great defeat of the French.
The idea that sporting success leads to electoral victory doesn't really stack up. Everyone forgets that the 1966 World Cup win actually came after Wilson's landslide in 1966 - and dear Harold's media posturing may have contributed to people's desire to kick him out and hence Heath's surprise win in 1970. And, when you think about it, did the 1936 Olympics really do all that much for Hitler's image?

William Hill have just cut the odds on Labour winning the next election as a result of the Olympic decision.
Posted by: Editor | 06 July 2005 at 16:13
This is going to cost a lot to organise and given our track record on capital projects, I predict much waste, graft and corruption (see the Millennium Dome).

I think us winning the Olympics is actually favourable to the Tories if New Labour make a cock up of the first 4/5 years of building

ONLY because of the Olympic decision? What took William Hill so long?

Bringing the Olympics to Britain is a fantastic achievement - and all the sweeter because we beat Chirac. It marks a further swing of momentum away from Old Europe.
This will be great for our national self-confidence & sense of nationhood.
It will, however, have absolutely zip to do with our choice of government in 2009 or 2010 - unless it looks like it's going to turn into The Return of the Dome, in which case it will boost our chances in opposition (see what happened in Athens when an incoming government had to sort out the mess left behind in very short order).
Editor - not sure whether Coe will want to run for Mayor until after 2012 - he might be a little busy with this. In the meantime, he is a Tory - and I wonder who he will back in the leadership.
This is a wonderful opportunity, and I have serious concerns about the outlook on life of those who don't feel a need to celebrate wildly at least for a day or two. The whingers on this Blog should take a running jump (assuming they are not obese couch potatoes!) Who knows - they might find it an exhilerating experience & change their erspectives a little.

I enjoyed the footage of despondant French people. What more do you want?
"The whingers on this Blog should take a running jump"
Yeah, but I'll put your taxes up to pay for a running and jumping venue first ;=)

The French are accusing us of dirty tricks now that we've won:

Words can't express the anger I feel at this kind of talk from a group of bad losers.

Coe for London mayoral candiate - what an excellent idea. Let's hope one of his advisors is reading this!
Success breeds success, and there must be a limit to the number of times people can be asked to vote for a recycled loser. Fortunately, not being a Londoner, I have never had to cast a vote in this particular election...

The French bid was so much better than the London one, you really do have to hand it to Chirac.
Increasingly looking like a fool on the world's biggest stages.
