David is Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and has been the Member of Parliament for Havant since 1992.
David married to Sarah Butterfield. She is an artist and has exhibited in London and New York. They have two children, Imogen, 16 and Matthew, 13.
David and Sarah are keen walkers on the South Downs and swimmers. David has swum for charity against an Olympic hopeful and raised £1,500 for charity cycling in the Paris to Hayling ride.
He has worked at HM Treasury, the Number 10 Policy Unit, and served as Paymaster General in the last Conservative Government. He has also previously served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions and for Trade & Industry.
He is a Visiting Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation, a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a member of the Global Aging Commission, a member of the Advisory Board of the British Council, Visiting Professor at the Cass Business School, and Economic Adviser to Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.
