The idea that London requires more immigration could only be held by someone who hasn't been canvassing in the East End recently. I knock on a door. Woman opens it. I say the name on the roll. She says in broken English: they do not live here. The roll is up to date. A large amount of our social housing in Hackney appears to be sublet to new immigrants (by whom?). How many do Boris' banker friends think we need, and how much poverty and overcrowding and - yes - dislocation are they prepared to countenance to get it? Economic theory like this is pointless when it leads to too many adults crammed into too few bedrooms. The only liberation I see it delivering is for the rich people who employ the newcomers as cleaners.
