Today’s
papers remind us that however frustrating the aftermath of the General
Election may be, things could be very much grimmer.
Iraq’s government
has been pottering on while the "loser" in the election has been attempting to
stitch together a working coalition of smaller parties.
In Iraq of
course that is complicated by the explosive mix of ethnic minorities, politics
and history in a way that (outside of Northern Ireland) doesn’t exist in the UK.
But as yesterday’s events show at their most cruel and extreme, even an
electoral defeat by a margin of two seats is enough to create a sense of
outrage and of cheating where the incumbent party tries to hang on.
