The election seems likely to be fought - at least on a national level - predominantly on the economy. However, it will be won or lost in the 117 marginal seats we need to win in order to gain an overall majority; and it will be won or lost on the decisions of swing voters in those constituencies.
So we need messages on the economy that will convince such people on the doors to vote Conservative, messages that are personal to voters own immediate circumstances.
To help those trying to win those 117+ seats I’d like to invite readers to make suggestions of simple one-liners that will be meaningful to ordinary people who are as yet undecided voters, many of whom will never have voted Conservative before.
I’ll kick off with two I tried yesterday morning in a Labour held target seat:
"The first thousand pounds of income tax you pay - just goes to pay the interest on the debt the Labour government have run up."
and
"The entire amount of income tax paid by people earning £11,000 a year or less (such as teaching assistants and care workers) now just goes on paying the interest on the debt the Labour government have run up"
(For the record - interest on government debt is now £43 billion a year - which is more than our total defence spending of £40 billion and nearly twice our transport spending of £22 billion).
Please post your suggestions below - and indicate whether you have actually tried them among swing voters – thanks!
