Time was when the think-tank Demos worshipped at the New Labour altar and its politically correct agenda.
But as Demos seeks to refocus its efforts with a change of government looking highly likely, I was intrigued earlier today to get an invitation to a panel discussion it is hosting next week.
The topic? "The Politics of Fairness: The battle for equality in the UK"
And the speakers are:
- David Willetts MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Universities and Skills
- Jon Cruddas, Labour MP for Dagenham
- David Laws MP, Liberal Democrat Children, School and Families spokesman
- Richard Wilkinson, Director, The Equality Trust
- Richard Reeves, Director, Demos (Chair)
Five white men talking about equality - and because they are the best placed people to do so rather than because someone has sought to construct a panel which attempted to perfectly reflect the gender and ethnic balance of the country. Well done Demos - good to see you actively encouraging meritocracy rather than tokenism!
