BBC business editor Robert Peston was in my university city of York last night to explain the global economic crisis to over 1,000 people who gathered at York Minster to hear him deliver his Ebor lecture.
During questions at the end of the lecture, I am told that one of the audience asked him the following:
"If you were the next Chancellor of the Exchequer, what would be your first, your very first, practical action?"
Alas his reply was less than illuminating:
"If I answer that, I'll be fired by the BBC."
