As Daniel Hannan predicted back in August, support for the Icelandic Government's application for European Union membership is falling faster than a piece of molten rock discharged by the Hekla Volcano.
The proportion of Icelandic voters favouring accession has fallen precipitously from its peak of 64% in the midst of the March 2009 bank collapse to only 29% today. Indeed, the 29% figure registered this week indicates the lowest proportion of pro-EU voters for more than half a decade.
While the Icelandic government is yet to announce the date for the country's accession referendum it strongly appears as if the attempts of Johanna Sigurdardottir's leftist coalition to subsume their country into the European Union are headed the same way as Norway's 1972 and 1994 applications: defeat at the hands of the people.
