Believe it or not, Party Political Broadcasts were first shown 75 years ago. Who said the age of spin was something new?!
That said, I would suggest that it is only over the last couple of decades or so that the format has become especially sophisticated; prior to that it was often simply a case of sitting a politician in a studio and having them talk awkwardly straight into the camera and address the nation.
